Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground chicken provides moisture and protein
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil (like avocado or vegetable) for sautéing
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced adds aromatic flavor
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced contributes warmth and spice
  • 2 pieces green onions, sliced adds crunch and freshness; green tops reserved for garnish
  • ¾ cup fresh orange juice from 2-3 oranges; provides sweetness and acidity
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest enhances the orange flavor
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium preferred) adds depth and umami
  • 2 tablespoons honey gives sweetness and balances acidity
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar adds tanginess
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil provides a nutty aroma
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch acts as a thickening agent
  • 2 tablespoons cold water helps dissolve the cornstarch

Instructions

Cooking Instructions

  • Begin by heating the neutral oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Make sure the oil is hot enough that it shimmers but does not smoke.
  • Add the minced garlic and ginger to the skillet. Stir gently, allowing their aromas to release for about a minute.
  • Incorporate the lean ground chicken into the skillet, breaking it apart with a cooking spoon or spatula. Cook until fully browned.
  • Once browned, add the sliced green onions (reserving the green tops for later) and stir for about a minute.
  • Pour in the fresh orange juice and sprinkle the orange zest. Stir to combine and allow to come to a gentle simmer.
  • Add the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and toasted sesame oil. Stir well to mix all ingredients.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and cold water until smooth, then gradually pour it into the skillet while stirring.
  • Cook for a few minutes until the sauce thickens, ensuring it clings nicely to the chicken.
  • Once thickened, remove from heat, taste and adjust seasoning, then serve the ground orange chicken, garnishing with the reserved green tops.

Notes

Ground orange chicken can be enjoyed over rice, in lettuce wraps, or even transformed into a filling breakfast. Store leftovers properly for best results.
