Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the loaf of bread into 1-inch thick slices.
  • In a mixing bowl, crack the four large eggs and beat them until yolks and whites are combined.
  • Add the one cup of whole milk (or half and half) to the egg mixture.
  • Stir in the half cup of canned pumpkin puree until blended well.
  • Add the brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, ground cloves, and salt, mixing until all spices are evenly distributed.

Cooking

  • Preheat your griddle or skillet over medium heat, adding a tablespoon of butter or oil to coat the surface.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the pumpkin custard mixture, soaking for about 15 seconds on each side.
  • Place the soaked slices onto the preheated griddle or skillet, cooking for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Remove French toast from heat and place on a serving plate, keeping warm in a low oven if making multiple batches.
  • Serve with maple syrup, whipped cream, toasted pecans, or powdered sugar.

Notes

For best results, use stale or day-old bread. Adjust spices to taste and avoid overcrowding the skillet for even cooking. Store leftovers properly for best preservation.
