  • 4 medium Onions Choose sweet onions for better flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or oil Choose butter for richer flavor; oil can also be used.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Helps in drawing out moisture from the onions.
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar (optional) Enhances caramelization and sweetness, use as desired.

Preparation

  • Peel and slice the onions evenly. Set aside to prepare for cooking.

Cooking

  • Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat until melted and hot.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet, stirring to coat them in the butter or oil.
  • Sprinkle salt over the onions and stir well.
  • Allow the onions to cook down, stirring occasionally until they turn golden brown and become tender, about 20 to 40 minutes.
  • If desired, add sugar about halfway through cooking and stir well.
  • Continue to cook the onions until they reach your desired level of caramelization, then remove from heat.

Notes

Use low to medium heat to prevent burning. Stir frequently and allow plenty of cooking time to develop deep flavor. Leftovers can be stored and reheated as needed.
